BLACKPOOL & FYLDE CHESS LEAGUES

REPORT 2/2019/20 - NOVEMBER

DIVISION C
Lytham fourths provided the November fireworks as team of the month having played and won all three of their matches, one of which was a creditable victory over their club mates, Lytham thirds. They began this treble though, with a 1.5 - 2.5 win at Poulton Thirds. While Poulton's veteran captain Ken Gorman beat Lytham's veteran captain Keith Sansom on top board, new players Darren Pickering on board 3 and Marvin Carbin on board 4 swung the match in Lytham's favour beating Poulton new players David McCormick and Peter Ayling respectively. On board 2 Boris Garanins and John Cox agreed a draw after a feisty battle.
Lytham Fourths second victory was again a 2.5 - 1.5 score over the Thirds. Boards 1 and 2, Graham Taylor and Dennis Davies overcame Bob Tinton and Ray Pomeroy respectively and on 3, Darren Pickering held on to a fine draw with Colin Wilks. On board 4, Pat Coleman escaped a very threatening situation against Marvin Carbin with an attacking queen move to earn the only full point for the Thirds.
The third win came at Leyland when again the margin was 1.5 - 2.5. Graham Taylor drew on board 1 v Rob Hart and wins for Darren Pickering on board 2 v Nicholas Bishop and a fine bishop sacrificial win for John Cox v Martin Craven on board 4 ensured the winning points for Lytham. Leyland's Ken Lawson was their full point scorer on board 3 beating Lytham captain Keith Sansom. Not surprisingly, Lytham fourths top Division C with 6 points while Lytham thirds and Leyland trail behind on 2 points each.

The only game in Division A saw Preston Seconds overcome Poulton firsts by 1.5 – 3.5. Phil Taylor and Peter Thompson gained wins over Mike Parker and Peter Garrett respectively and the other three games between David Phillips and Peter Jowett, Oleg Cukovs and Conor Reaney and Ben Fearnhead and Geoff Pennington, were all drawn. A special mention should go to Peter Jowett who accepted the draw offered by David, even though his opponent only had 26 seconds left on his clock. A noble gesture.

In Division B, Lytham Seconds only scored one match point out of four with a defeat by Preston Thirds and a draw with Bispham. Preston's Geoff Pennington and Charalampos Patsos won againsy Peter Wilson and Colin Wilks and even though Graham Taylor beat Preston's Joss Daune on board 4, Bob Tinton and Bill Moffatt could only draw on board 2. Again, the popular score 1.5 – 2.5. In their second match, Lytham seconds could only draw 2 - 2 with Bispham despite their superior grading balance. Jakub Sosinski enjoyed a superb endgame victory over Phil Raynor, but Bob Tinton beat Ron Broxson to even the match. Games between David Aspinal and Blaine McGrady, and Peter Wilson and Peter Wallace were both drawn.

The only other two games played in November were the two Rapidplay Handicap Cup games where Poulton Firsts easily secured the required 4.5 victory margin by beating Lytham Firsts 6 - 2. At the halfway point, wins for Poulton's Peter Garrett over David Aspinall, and for Lytham's Peter Wilson over Ben Fearnhead were matched by draws between David Phillips and John Cooper on board 1, and Mike Parker and Phil Raynor on board 2. Halftime 2 - 2 and things looked good for the Lytham team, but a sad, second half 4 - 0 defeat put the Lytham team out of the competition.
In the other match in this competition, Preston Firsts 288 grading point advantage displayed itself in a comprehensive 0 - 8 victory over Bispham. Peter Jowett beat Jakub Sosinski twice, Malcolm Peacock scored similarly over Blaine McGrady, Paul O'Mara beat Keith Wilcox 2 - 0 and David Tuke also scored a 2 - 0 victory over Peter Wallace. Never mind Bispham, maybe it is your year for the Plate competition.
